Jacobian Free Computation of Lyapunov Exponents
The purpose of this paper is to present new algorithms to approximate Lyapunov exponents of nonlinear differential equations, without using Jacobian matrices. We first derive first order methods for both continuous and discrete QR approaches, and then second order methods. Numerical testing is given, showing considerable savings with respect to existing implementations.
متن کاملImplementation of the Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov
14 We have implemented the Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) method 15 for solving the first-order ice sheet momentum equation in order to improve 16 the numerical performance of the Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM), the 17 land ice component of the Community Earth System Model (CESM). Our 18 JFNK implementation is based on significant re-use of existing code. For ex19 ample, our physics-based...
متن کاملGlobal Integrability of the Jacobian of a Composite Mapping
Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi (1804–1851), one of the nineteenth century Germany’s most accomplished scientists, developed the theory of determinants and transformations into a powerful tool for evaluating multiple integrals and solving differential equations. Since then, the Jacobian (determinant) has played a critical role in multidimensional analysis and related fields, including nonlinear elasti...
متن کاملThe Divergence-free Jacobian Conjecture in Dimension Two
A special case, called the divergence-free case, of the Jacobian Conjecture in dimension two is proved. This note outlines an argument for a special case of the Jacobian conjecture in dimension two: Suppose F : C → C is a polynomial so that F (0) = 0, F ′(0) = I, det(F ′(z)) = 1, z ∈ C. (1) where I is the identity transformation on C. Write F (x, y) = ( r(x, y) + x s(x, y) + y ) , (x, y) ∈ C wh...
متن کاملGlobal stabilization of feedforward systems with exponentially unstable Jacobian linearization
The global stabilization of a class of feedforward systems having an exponentially unstable Jacobian linearization is achieved by a high gain feedback saturated at a low level. The control law forces the derivatives of the state variables to small values along the closed loop trajectories. This “slow control” design is illustrated with a benchmark example and its limitations are emphasized.
